Only last week our investigation training team emphasised the importance of recording investigation decision-making and rationale with the latest cohort of Level 3 Certificate in Investigation courses. We stress the criticality of recording why you did not do something as much as why you did do something.

As an aside, we may have missed it but have not yet heard any counsel ask for a casebook or press home on recording decision-making rationale. Similarly what pre-interview briefing they gave to suspects in advance of interviewing them under caution and how that was recorded.
