Catching Britain’s Killers: The Crimes That Changed Us
Our Chairman, Professor Eric Shepherd, features in the last episode of this excellent series that travels the investigation journey from interrogation to investigative interview, from Judges Rules, PACE, DNA, PEACE, through to present day tactical use of evidence, active defence, ABE, interview recording and conversation management, such that future miscarriages of justice are more likely to stem from the interviewing of victims and witnesses, NOT suspects.
Professor Shepherd and his close academic author and ex UK police investigative interview champion, Dr Andy Griffiths, co-authored the definitive text on investigation and investigative interviewing (2nd edition). The global world of investigation and the fight against justice miscarriages owes a huge debt of gratitude to them both. We await the third edition anxiously!
Eric won’t like me publicly recording this but here goes anyway!
Eric, more than anybody, has fought a 30 year fight to transform investigation practice into the ethical and robust skillset it became in the UK, peaking in around 2013/14, occasionally in the face of resistance and stubborn intransigence from the ignorant and immune to change, often those that failed to understand that miscarriage of justice included the guilty evading conviction as much as the innocent being convicted; that investigation is so much more than the hunt for a “head on a stick”, that conviction of the innocent creates more victims, work that has never been about ‘us and them’ or ‘working for the other side’ as once said by an incompetent senior investigator.
Erics work has been built upon by a series of academics and researchers since but he is peerless in his grasp of forensic psychology research and practice, a unique entity that has the ability to apply both elements in the cauldron of active investigation.
We await the concluding episode with a little trepidation but great interest!
